Total Organic Carbon (TOC)

Measure of organic impurities

Total Organic Carbon (TOC) is defined in the ISPE Guide: Cleaning Validation Lifecycle: Applications, Methods & Controls as, "A non-specific analytical procedure that involves oxidizing the residue to carbon dioxide, and then measuring the generated carbon dioxide." TOC should be used when there is potential for a variety of contaminants or residues that contain significant amounts of organic carbon.
