Organic Solvents
Carbon-containing solvents
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines organic solvents as "carbon-based substances capable of disolving or dispersing one or more other substance". Phamracueitcals are organic compounds containing carbon making them highly soluble to organic solvents that have similiar properties such as polarity. Some organic solvents are also volatile, such as methanol, so they evaporate after use leaving no solvent on the equipment surface. The solvation and volatility of organic solvents make them commonly used in swab sampling for product residue.
