Limit of Detection

Lowest detectable quantity

The limit of detection (LOD) or detection limit is defined in ICH Q2(R2) Validation of Analytical Procedures as, "The lowest amount of an anlyte in a sample which can be detected but not necessarily quantified as an exact value." Measurements are not considered quantifiable at this level and can only be used to determine that some amount of analyte can be detected in the sample.
