Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT)

Pre-installation equipment testing

Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) is defined in PDA Technical Report 48, Moist Heat Sterilizer Systems: Design, Commissioning, Operation, Qualification and Maintenance, as "A test typically conducted by the sterilizer manufacturer after the system has been assembled and before the system is shipped to the installation site". FAT is applicable to more than just sterilizers as seen in this definition, such as a reactor. Often times a user requirement specification (URS) is prepared by the company outlining the exact needs and details for the equipment, the FAT test ensures those needs are met prior to accepting the equipment.
